    Nurse’s Week – May 8 – 12, 2023

    Our Nurses. Our Future.

In 1971, May 12, the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, was designated as International Nurses Day. In 1985, a resolution was passed to begin negotiations with the federal government to have the week containing May 12 proclaimed as National Nurses Week annually. Soon after, the federal minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. In 1993, the name was changed to National Nursing Week to emphasize the profession's accomplishments as a discipline.

Fairvern will be celebrating our Nursing team May 8-12.

Our RN’s and RPN’s will be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the care and support of our Residents.

There are various events planned throughout the week to acknowledge these team members.

Thank you for all of us to all of our Nurses!

Friends of Fairvern Pop Tab Fundraising

The Friends of Fairvern need your help. They have been collecting aluminum can tabs over the past few years. They are then taken to a local metal recycler for cash. Please consider saving your aluminum tabs and dropping them off at Fairvern

The Friends of Fairvern use these funds to help purchase resident comfort items and other items needed for the home.

We greatly appreciate the continued support from this wonderful group of volunteers that have been with us since the opening of Fairvern.

    Fairvern Family Council

The Fairvern Family Council will be holding a hybrid meeting on Tuesday May 30th at 6pm. All are welcome to attend in person or by Zoom. For the Zoom link and further information, please contact the council at fairvernfamilycouncil@gmail.com.

    Resident Clothing Seasonal Change

With the arrival of spring weather, we are encouraging our families to start looking at your loved one’s clothing to make the change over to Spring and Summer attire. Please ensure that the Fall and Winter clothing is taken home. If new clothing is brought in, please ensure that the items are labelled by our laundry department. New clothing can be left at the nurse’s station to have the labelling completed.

    Hairdresser

As the Home is still actively looking for a replacement to fill the hairdresser role, please consider booking an outside hairdresser to come in and look after your resident’s hair cut.

Families can arrange for an outside hairdresser to come in and use the Fairvern hair salon. Once your hair appointment is booked, please call Mary Woodruff at 705-789-6011 extension 4339 or by email at mary.woodruff@muskoka.ca so the hair salon can be reserved.

We ask that a family member be in attendance to bring their resident to and from the appointment.

Ministry of Long Term Care Inspections and Reports

All LTC homes in the province are subject to unannounced inspections by Ministry of Long Term Care inspectors. To date in 2023, Fairvern has had 2 inspections completed, one, a Proactive Inspection and, two, an inspection related to a concern.

The reports generated from these inspections are public. They are posted in the home on a bulletin board on the Main Floor by the lounge. They are also available on this website, http://publicreporting.ltchomes.net/en-ca/default.aspx.

The results of the inspections are shared with Residents Council, Family Council and staff as well as the plans for improvement based on the findings.

Should you have any questions, please contact Carrie at ext. 4308 or stop by.

How does this impact the District of Muskoka Long-Term Care Homes?

    Screening

    • Active screening is no longer required for staff, students, volunteers, support workers, caregivers, and visitors. Anyone wishing to come to the home for any reason should self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and other respiratory or infectious diseases. If you’re unwell, stay home.

    • Residents will no longer be required to actively screen when returning from an absence.

    Testing

    • Asymptomatic testing is no longer required for staff, students, volunteers, support workers, caregivers, and visitors. This means that you will no longer need to complete a rapid test when coming into one of our long-term care homes.

    Masking

    • Masking requirements indoors remain in place for staff, students, volunteers, support workers, caregivers, and visitors.

    • Masking requirements outdoors for residents, caregivers and visitors has been removed. However, masking outdoors remains in place for staff when they are in close proximity to a resident.

    Physical Distancing

    • Our long-term care homes may hold activities without adjusting to optimize for physical distancing.

    Illness / Outbreak

    • The limit of one caregiver at a time during an outbreak or when a resident is symptomatic or isolating under additional precautions is no longer required.

    • Homes will no longer be required to submit daily COVID-19 outbreak data to the ministry, however they will continue to be required to report confirmed outbreaks using the Critical Incident System.

    • LTC homes will continue to be required to monitor residents daily to detect the presence of infection, including COVID-19. However, measures which go beyond what is required under the IPAC Standard, including daily temperature checks for COVID-19, will no longer be required.

    Still have questions?

    Contact your Administrator:

    Carrie Acton

    705-645-2100 Ext. 4848

Or refer to the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 Guidance: Long-Term Care Homes, Retirement Homes, and Other Congregate Living Settings for Public Health Units for any additional screening practices, including temperature checks for any resident who is symptomatic, has tested positive or has been exposed to COVID-19.

Dear Fairvern Stakeholder, Family Members, Staff and Volunteers:

Please be advised that Fairvern remains in a whole home outbreak.

There is one (1) positive Resident and nine (9) Residents who have been resolved on 1st floor and five (5) positive Residents and eight (8) Residents who have been resolved on 2nd floor.

Cohorting continues on both floors and staff are completing twice daily monitoring of all residents for signs and symptoms. Residents are being encouraged to stay in their rooms and meal service is being delivered to them. Resident masking is also being encouraged for those who can tolerate the mask.

Power of Attorneys for Residents who are positive have been notified. We are working with Public Health and should there be changes you will be notified.

Public Health has advised Fairvern that Residents are discouraged from leaving the Home during the outbreak. Should you choose to take your loved one out, we strongly recommend that a mask be worn by the Resident and yourself. At this time, only Essential Caregivers may visit Residents and only visit your loved one. If your Resident is in a COVID positive room, only one (1) Essential Caregiver is allowed to visit per Resident at one time. For other rooms there can be two (2) Essential Caregivers visiting at one time per Resident. Eye protection and a facemask is required for both floors and will be provided by the Home. Please ensure Infection Protocols are followed and hand hygiene is completed. If your loved one is positive, you will be required to wear additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Please see staff should you have any questions.

Please remember that the virus is highly transmissible. We are providing this message so that those wishing to visit our Home can make their own determination regarding entering the Home to visit their loved one.

In the meantime, we will continue to do our very best to keep everyone in our Home safe. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

    Sincerely,

    Carrie Acton, Administrator

Karen Jeffries, Resident Care Coordinator/Infection Control Nurse
